We took the backstage guided tour with guide Ken. It was absolutely wonderful. He was a font of knowledge and information about the building, Thomas Ryman, and all the rest of the characters who really made this former church (Union Gospel Tabernacle) the “mother church of country music.”
The guided tour takes you into all the dressing rooms where you learn about all the stars old and new. You also get to walk on stage, and, have your pic taken on center stage. And it also included a tour of Johnny Cash’s touring. Us parked out back.
You learn such interesting tidbits as WSM, the call sign of the radio station that still broadcasts the show from its location in Opryland, meant We Shield Millions, because it was started by an insurance company. Hey, that should be a Final Jeopardy question.
To sum it up it was one of the highlights of our trip to Nashville, and it could be yours too.
In town for a few days and decided to do the self-guided tour. This is an amazing destination and totally underrated on every media outlet I reviewed prior to going.
First of all, walking around outside the building there are various historical markers that tell you about the auditorium and the history of country music. There are various life size bronze statues around, especially at the front, which are magnificent. So many heroes of bluegrass and country music memorialized!
It’s $30 per adult, but we’ll worth it. Once inside the first stop is a brief 12 minute historical video which is exceptionally done. As you exit the movie hall the walls are lined with all sorts of memorabilia. Absolutely beautiful and informative. As you work your way down to the floor level of the auditorium, you have an option to get on the stage and have a photo taken at the microphone, center stage, as if you were performing. This is included in the fee of admission and you pick it up at the gift shop on you way out. That picture really added to the experience. The walking tour continues with all of the walkways and hallways covered in memorabilia, pictures and narratives. This is a Nashville and American treasure, do not miss it!
We paid about 76$ for 2 adults for a self guided tour. We were not rushed and were able to walk around freely and see all the history. They take a free souvenir picture of you onstage by the microphone. You pick it up at the end of the tour in the gift shop. The show you a short video when you enter about it as well. It was really cool.
